1 out of 5 stars Slow, Cluttered & Warning: Destroys Dates in Excel 2K Files   September 4, 2010
G. Ratcheson (Washington)
This is a temporary review which will be significantly updated soon, but I am so upset about what I experienced tonight that I chose to post now to hopefully help others avoid what I just went through. The next 4 paragraphs were written as a narrative before I solved the specific issue.

After "upgrading" from Office 2k to Office 2010, this trashed a vitally important spreadsheet that I must restore. The date still displays correctly in the formula bar, but not in the cell. I have tried all the formatting options (including the suggested =DateValue function process) with no success. Here's an example:

4/29/10 appears as 40297. 5/4/10 appears as 40302. Etc.

Reopening with Excel 2k does NOT solve the problem. The problem (including any new entries) is now identical in both versions of Excel. Files that have not been saved with 2010 do not have this problem. I have tried numerous reformatting options to no avail.

After this is resolved I will write a much more thorough review, but this is a CRISIS (Though my BAD for not doing a backup first!). I have not been able to Google a solution.

Edit: I figured out a solution. I have no idea why this worked, but it did.

1. Create a new book.

2. Pre-format the date columns.

3. Cut & paste 1 entire column at a time

Problem solved. It will save including the new formatting as office 2010 .xlsx or as Office 2k .xls.

I will be re-writing this review soon, but I am not real pleased at the moment for a number of reasons.

The short version is I think this product is a huge step backwards in usability from Office 2k & the ONLY reason to upgrade is because MS stopped issuing security patches for 2k to force unneeded upgrades. I am likely going to use 2010 as default & for files sent to me by others for security, but will likely use 2000 for files I created that I know are clean. In addition to the nightmare with Excel (& there are still unsolved issues with that spreadsheet), I find the menus & toolbars horribly cluttered & while Office 2k starts instantly, this takes around 10 seconds to start.

2 out of 5 stars Wow Microsoft sorry but not really impressed! Way too much money for what you get!   September 2, 2010
Michael Countryman (pelzer, sc)
Well I received this product last week and have been using for alittle bit and lets say um not really anything that says lets go out and spend a fortune for this upgrade. I have used office 97,03,07 and now 2110 and I really feel like it has lost its power that it had like in office 2003. Not that is a workhorse.
I am not going to go into alot of technical talk here since I am not a techie. Office 2007 and 2010 are very similar and other than the bar brought back there is not really much that has said it is an upgrade. I have always been a big fan of microsoft products in every since Vista came out I feel that Microsoft may be loosing headway and the latest Office 2010 Pro is no exception. I am not here to bash but money is hard to come by and I like to think that you will get a return on your investment and I just don't see it here.
Will I recommend going out and buying Office 2010? Only if you have too much money! I am really sorry Microsoft I hope they can get there act and pricing where they used to be.

3 out of 5 stars Good program with some reasonable and unreasonable purchase options and definitely unreasonable licensing   September 1, 2010
Kathleen San Martino (New Jersey)
As an average Microsoft user I only use a limited number of Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote features that are available in this software suite. Therefore, this review does not cover the elaborate functionality available to you in Office 2010 Professional but it does convey my first impressions and perceptions of this release.

I use to be a heavy user of Word and Outlook 2003. With the debut of Microsoft 2007, they updated their menu system (except for Microsoft Project, which is not included in this package) to a ribbon bar that took some getting used to. It was initially very frustrating to find the location of menu items that were second-nature to me. This means if you are going to upgrade from a version earlier than 2007, you will have to get use to a ribbon bar that you may or may not like.

In Office 2010, they've now enhanced that ribbon bar to be more intuitive because they put back the file menu from which you can manage document properties, document protection, etc. One other feature I like is when I open a Word document that has sections (such as a resume), there's a navigation pane that allows me to jump from section to section. There's also enhanced document security so that editing can be restricted to specific formatting (e.g. styles) or only certain types of edits (such as a restriction to filling in forms or adding comments, etc.)

What I didn't like between 2003 and 2007 was that you could not import your personal Outlook address book. I suspect you would encounter the same problem with Office 2010 if trying to import your address book from 2003 or before; I could not test this because I did not have an old map file. However, the integration from 2007 to 2010 should be seamless for any address files you have.

With regard to the entire product suite, I understand there is better/real-time collaboration in this version of Office with the use of SharePoint or Office Live; however, I also did not test this functionality nor do I have use for this on a personal level.

Two cons that I experienced were:

- It took me longer to load documents, especially when opening an older version of a document in 2010; I tested this with Excel and Word.

- A couple of times my own legitimate file was loaded in protected mode saying it was from an Internet location; I had to click the message that allowed me to open it for editing.

There are many licensing and pricing cons, in my opinion. For instance:

- Version upgrade suites are no longer available from Microsoft, which means you must pay more because you have to buy the full version.

- You'll need Internet access to activate your product before your activation period ends which is 30 days; if you fail to do so, your product is essentially useless because it goes into a "view-only-type" mode.

- They changed their license agreement so that you can only install this Office disc version three times either on the same computer or three different computers. Good luck if you have PC problems or are upgrading your computer; you'll probably have to repurchase the product.

There are options available for those still wishing to try or buy Office 2010. (Since Amazon doesn't allow me to post links in my review, I will post them in a comment.)

- You can try office for free to see if this is a sensible purchase for you. Locate this opportunity on the Microsoft web site.

- You can see if you qualify for the home use program which allows employees of registered companies with site licenses to purchase the product for $9.95.

- Those who purchased Microsoft 2007 recently might qualify for a free 2010 upgrade as part of their previous purchase.

In general, I like Office 2010 but unless you are upgrading from a really old version of Office or need the new features such as real-time collaboration, my recommendation would be try before you buy.

4 out of 5 stars The software is a must, but is the upgrade?   August 30, 2010
Sunny Sewing Honeybee
I'm a long-time Microsoft Office user, so this was merely an upgrade for me. For those unfamiliar with the programs, Word is necessary in most households, schools, and workplaces for word processing; PowerPoint is a must for students and businesses in order to create slideshow presentations; and Publisher is perfect for anyone doing home office or professional publishing. In addition to these three titles, the Office Professional package also contains the following programs:
* Access, a data-sharing program
* Excel, useful for spreadsheet applications and data management
* OneNote, which is like a virtual "notebook" that can be used for home, school, and work
* Outlook, for online e-mail communication

Some content not normally expected to requires an Internet connection, which may be a hassle at times for users. One example is that clip-art is largely online; for those wishing or needing to be offline while still working on a project, this can prove to be a downgrade from them being conveniently on a disc, as in the former version I have. The F1/help function also has more power with active Internet connectivity.

Compatibility of old files into the new versions of the software titles is a one-way street. Mileage may vary, but I checked the versions for compatibility, going from old version to new, and new version to old. For example, the new version of Publisher was able to accept an old format, but the old Publisher was unable to do the same, giving the response: "Publisher cannot open files from a different version." This inability to share files between versions of the software will undoubtedly prove problematic in a business or educational setting if everyone does not utilize the same version of the software.

This software suite is a must for anyone who doesn't already have a former version, or who is forced into getting one when someone else who shares files upgrades! Apart from that, however, an older version may suffice for those who already have one.

3 out of 5 stars Very Pricey and not the only game in town ...   August 30, 2010
Marty Gillis (Los Angeles, CA USA)
Microsoft Office Pro 2010 is a fully loaded, feature laden set of programs for home and office use. It's a bit computer resource intensive , but nothing a modern machine can't handle. I have a workhouse AMD Compaq (dual core) that cost me a hundred dollars less than this program sells for and it is able to load quickly and run the applications without hiccuping. The DVD loaded relatively quickly and installation went without a hitch.

I then spent some time navigating through all the programs and seeing what was there.
Personally I am most likely to use Outlook (a nice step up from Outlook express) which appears to have undergone a rather extensive makeover in both form and function, Word of course , and Publisher which will help me greatly in my business endeavors. I have no need right now for the other included features.

I was particularly impressed with the many photo editing features built in to both Publisher and Word as well. Sort of a bonus for me actually as I already have a number of good imaging editing options, but a few more are never a bad thing.

I have been using OO now for the last 5 years. It is a very good set of programs but it is not up to par with Office Pro in many areas. Office Pro is definitely a step up but I am not sure I can justify the price of admission. Perhaps Microsoft should think about lowering their prices to compete with all the excellent freeware out there. Of course, the user interface is much slicker than OO and there is more refinement in the functionality as well, but I can't see that justifying a price of over $400 when I can get the job done for considerably less. If I had purchased this program at that price I would have had buyers remorse already.
