3 out of 5 stars Limited Compatibility with Microsoft Office 2007 Documents   August 1, 2010
Alan in Idaho (Idaho Falls, ID United States)
If you plan to use Corel Home Office to work on your existing Microsoft (MS) Office 2007 (Word or Excel) documents, ya better check which features are used in the existing documents.

Corel Write messes up the logo image in my MS Word (2003) meeting minutes document and does not seem to handle outline numbering very well. There are likely other issues, but I've avoided using Corel Write with existing MS Word documents for the most part due to the compatibility problems on that first try.

Corel Calculate messes up number formats, cell shading colors, etc. in my MS Excel spreadsheets. The method for number entry is also different (e.g., must enter the year when entering dates in Corel Calculate, whereas MS Excel assumes the current year if none is specified).

Otherwise, Corel Home Office is a pretty good basic office suite and does run well on my Netbook (Vista, 2GB RAM).

The software is provided on a thumb drive, so you don't even have to hook up an optical drive to load it. The thumb drive is not useful for much else, however, due to its very small capacity (by current standards).

3 out of 5 stars Probably for netbooks only   June 17, 2010

I'm a big fan of Corel products, and even am one of the few people still using WordPerfect regularly at work. As it is, this is probably best used as a netbook app and falls a bit short on a laptop or PC.

4 out of 5 stars overpriced alternative to MS Works   June 12, 2010
Merrifield Winters (Seattle, WA)
Corel Home Office comes with many fine features and a light imprint that allows it to be an excell;ent app for the popular netbook devices. It is clear, thou, that this product means to compete with Microsoft's Works 9.0 product. In spite of the fact that Home Office comes with a handy document map/tabl;e of contents feature, there is no reason to buy this product over Works that retails at more than half the price. The idea of making the product only for netbooks is a serious error for Coirel and one that hurts the customer most of all. Not every family owns or needs a netbook and, since this product will not work on full-sized computers without erasing the flash drive, the home user stands to lose a lot for a hefty price of $69.99. Corel is known for its excellent products and this is certainly one of them, a quiet excellent program that has features much beyond the scope of Works 9 and, if properly used, can provide a simple alternative to either MS Word or Wordperfect. All in all, I recommend this program for netbook users only. It more than equals Works in functionality and it intuitive interface. Check out the Corel site before buying this. I took one star off for the complexity of the installation and the lack of any help from Corel to indicate which kind of hardware that this suite was defined for.Microsoft Works 9.0

3 out of 5 stars A Cheap Alternative To MS Office   May 28, 2010

I installed Corel Home Office on my Windows Vista laptop a few months ago and have been using the software in conjunction with MS Office 2007 which came preloaded with my laptop. The license for Office is only a "trial" so I was looking for an alternative to buying the premium priced and bloated Office Suite.

For the price Corel Home Office offers great basic features that probably will accommodate most average users. With MS Office I used Word and Excel most often - the equivalent programs with the Corel suite are 'Write' and 'Calculate'. Corel also offers a PowerPoint equivalent with Corel 'Show'. In my experience the Corel products worked great individually. Even the layout of 'Write' is similar to Word 2007. It took very little adjustment to learn the Corel software "buttonology".

However, for users intending to use this software for viewing & editing MS Office files be warned that Corel has limited compatibility. In my experience whenever I opened MS Office Excel or Word files most if not all of the formatting was lost. It's a tremendous hassle to have to reset all the formatting in a document or spreadsheet.

Bottom line, this is decent software and best suited for someone not concerned with MS Office compatibility.

4 out of 5 stars Easy to Use   May 19, 2010
Ronald Hammond (Key West, FL USA)

Corel Home Office is a lightweight program which consists of Write, Calculate and Show, a word processor, a spreadsheet and a presentation program. On installation it asks you which components you want to install and since I was installing it on an HP Mini netbook and since I don't do spreadsheets or presentations, I elected to only install Write.

The first thing I noticed is how much Write has borrowed (or stolen, depending on your point of view) from Microsoft Word. Creating a new document is a piece of cake. Write has most of the features you'd expect including background colors, however there is no highlighting feature, not a feature I use often, but one I'd like to have. Other than that I'm completely happy with the program. It's very easy to use.
